For almost a year we have been using a Nokia phone with the AT&T "one rate" plan.  Basically the plan covers all of the US (and there is an option to include Canada), without incurring roaming charges. We selected a 1000 minute plan and frankly the 750 minute plan might have been a good choice.

Our Nokia phone is a dual mode phone and is able to switch between digital and analog systems if required.  In general, the connection quality is usually good, but it is sometimes poor and sometimes it is excellent.  I particularly like the number of hours that we get in standby and talk.  When looking at such phones compare the standby and talk numbers carefully.

Our objective in getting a "cellular" phone was to conduct business when we were in transit and needed to reach a referring veterinarian or to call a client for an important follow-up or emergency call.

We call blocked the "cellular" phone number.  We also do not advertise the phone number or give it out to just anybody.

After clinic normal business hours, the digital messaging system calls the "cellular" phone when it receives an "urgent" call message.
