UPS = Uninterrupted Power Supply

We take the position that each computer should have its own UPS.  If you do not attach to an UPS, at least use a surge protector device for each computer.

A UPS will typically provide protection against temporary or momentary loss of power, power spikes and surges, and low power (brownout).  Many UPS units also provide protection of telephone line connections.

Please read and heed the notices given regarding the connection to laser printers.  In general, a laser printer should not be connected to an UPS unless specifically approved by the UPS manufacturer.

APC and TrippLite are two companies that manufacture UPS and related equipment that is widely available in the United States.

Recently we added an OmniSmart 1050 PNP UPS from TrippLite at two workstations.  In the event of a power failure, the UPS is able to keep the system running for up to about 60 minutes.  The unit has six protected outlets.  The UPS and provided software support unattended automatic shutdown of a system.
